Black Rainbows - "Cosmic Ritual Super Trip"

This edition of Fresh Tracks is an album edition. The 70's Stoner Rock movement continues into 2020 with the new offerings from Black Rainbows on their new album "Cosmic Ritual Supertrip". Their Facebook page places them in Rome and their web biography reads "Black Rainbows are now established among the best Heavy Psych Stoner Space band coming from Europe, spreading the word of Fuzz since 2007!" Joining other bands like Church Of The Cosmic Skull and Wo Fat, fuzz infused psych doom rock is back with an ax to grind with the modern polish of today's rock scene.

"Cosmic Ritual Supertrip" is the first experience I've had with Black Rainbows. It was a pleasant surprise as it riffed its way through tracks like "Glittereyzed", "Hypnotized By The Solenoid", and "Universal Phase". Occasionally it starts leaning towards sounding like a bar band that has just discovered High on Fire, but largely the vision of being a Heavy Psych Stoner Space band is wholly realized. It has everything you'd want from this genre, vocals with attitude, riffs that swagger, and that thick fuzzy guitar tone that Stoner Rock enjoys.

The first track that really captured my attention is the second track "Universal Phase". It has a strong stoner doom feel with the tempo and feel that is reminiscent of early Red Fang material. My favorite part is the peppering of samples from movies giving the song a grindhouse feel.

Other tracks I enjoyed were "Isolation" for the general tone of the song, the riff was good and the solos peppered through it worked well. "Hypnotized By The Solenoid" slowly crescendos over a repetitive riff into a final wailing solo. A little slow to start for me, but the wait pays off. "Master Rocket Power Blast" has a bone-shaking riff that reminds me at times of Motorhead and some more Red Fang. Last Track I'd like to shout out is "Glittereyzed". This track took me right back to tracks off of "Superunknown" by Soundgarden which is one of my favorite albums of all time. It features some shimmery clean guitar work that makes for a nice break in the pace of the album. Don't worry, it ramps up into that fuzzed-out rocker tone about halfway through with a closing that feels quite natural.

Definitely take some time to check out this album. If you like the 70's rock aspect of the material I'd also suggest you check out Church Of the Cosmic skull. It is less on the fuzz and more on the 70's prog, but excellent none-the-less. If you like the fuzzed-out psych riffing, check out Wo Fat. My favorite offering from Wo Fat is "The Conjuring" but they have plenty to offer.
